How to choose buttons
for the clothes you love.

Start with the button you already have

When choosing replacement buttons for a cardigan, shirt or jacket, keep an original button as your reference. Measure its diameter across the widest point in millimetres. For a heart, flower or another irregular shape, note both the width and height.

Check the existing buttonhole as well as the measurements. A button should pass through comfortably and stay closed when worn. Thickness and raised details can change the fit, even when two buttons have the same listed width. Avoid forcing a larger button through a knitted opening; choose a closer match or ask a tailor about alterations.

Look at the back: holes or a shank?

A sew-through button has holes in its face. A shank button has a loop on the back through which the thread passes. Turn over your original button and compare its attachment with the replacement you are considering.

The attachment changes how a button sits against the fabric. A raised button may leave more room beneath it, while a flatter style gives a different profile. Check the product photographs and selected option; if the back is not clear, ask before ordering. Decorative clothing accents may attach differently and should not automatically be treated as working fasteners.

Match the weight to the garment

For a fine cardigan or a light blouse, consider how much weight the fabric can support. A heavy detail can pull on delicate material. A structured jacket or coat may support a more substantial button, but its buttonhole and fastening still need to match.

Lay a candidate button against the garment before sewing. Look at the drape with the garment both open and closed, and check whether raised petals or other details catch on the fabric. If you are making something new, test the button and buttonhole on a scrap of the same fabric first.

Choose a statement button like a piece of jewelry

Once the fit is right, think about the mood. Flower buttons can echo a print or soften a plain jacket. Heart-shaped buttons add a playful, romantic detail to a simple shirt or cardigan.

Try a complete matching row for a considered finish, or one special button at a cuff or neckline. Coordinate with the jewelry you enjoy wearing, or pick a contrast that makes a neutral garment feel new.
